Maldives Environment Management Project (MEMP)

Maldives Environment Management Project (MEMP), supported by the World Bank / IDA, is a five year project started in 2008. The main objective of the project is to build environmental capacity in the Maldives. Specifically, the project expects to advance the national development agenda by enhancing the environmental sustainbaility of growth in the Maldives and improving the mangement of its key environmental assets. By seeking to increse capacity and understanding of sustainable practices in environmental management, the project is expected to contribute to the principles of the sustainable tourism and environmental conservation as enunciated in the Third Tourism Master Plan.

The target area of the project is north central Maldives, or the Northern Province (Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani).

The project has three main components:

2: Capacity Building for Environment

3: Technical Assistance for strengthening environmental management and monitoring and pilot a regional strategic environmental assessment.

As a key stakeholder of the project MRC building its research capacity and getting technical suport in strengthening three core area of its reasearch; Coral Reef Monitoring, bait fish research and reef fisheries monitoring.
