Planned Activities and Timings

The Symposium will be held 18-20 July 2009, at Paradise Island Resort, Maldives. MRC is providing a secretariat for the Symposium, and will handle most finances through an audited account.  A peer-reviewed proceedings volume of scientific papers will be produced within one year of the Symposium. 

The Secretariat of  the International Whaling Commission has undertaken to print the peer-reviewed scientific proceedings of the Symposium in its existing Journal or Special Publications series. IWC will also provide some editorial assistance.

There will be national press coverage (print, TV and radio) of the Symposium, and of all related public awareness activities. Sponsorship will be fully acknowledged and logos of sponsors will be displayed on symposium literature, symposium sessions and the final scientific proceedings volume. It is also anticipated will be regional press coverage, although this is still to be confirmed. Exposure to sponsors will be given according to the sliding scale given below:

Sponsorship amount - $1000

  • Waive registration fee of one participant
  • Partial exposure of sponsor's logo

Sponsorship amount - $2000

  • Waive registration fee and transport of one participant
  • Partial exposure of sponsor's logo

Sponsorship amount - $5000

  • Waive registration fee, transport and accommodation costs of one participant
  • Full exposure of sponsor's logo

Sponsorship amount - $10000

  • Waive - negotiable
  • Full exposure of sponsor's logo

Educational and Public Awareness Components of the Project

  1. Public awareness about cetaceans and the threats they face in the region will be addressed through local (and it is hoped regional and international) media.
  2. Local school children will be invited to some symposium sessions, and have their own forum for discussion.
  3. Public lectures will be given in Malé, to which school children (notably those studying environmental and fisheries sciences) will be invited.
  4. Key politicians will be invited to the opening session of the Symposium, and briefed on the outcomes of the Symposium.
