MRC Tagging Cruise - December 2008

A fresh episode of tag release is currently uderway in the north of Maldives. The trip that will last for 2 weeks started on 17 December 2008. We expect to release over 12,000 tags on this cruise, says team leader Mr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee, Senior Research Officer of MRC.  Three teams working in tandem will attempt to tag and release yellowin, skipjack and bigey tuna on opportunistic basis. 

The Tuna Tagging Programme is a collaborative programme between the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission and MRC. A Reginal Tuna Tagging Programme funded by EU, and executed by the IOTC completed in June 2008. Over 20,000 tags  have been recovered from over 160,000 releases.

Tuna tagging is the most effective means for obtaining information, such as fishing and natural mortality rates, growth and movement rates for stock assessment work. Recoveries also provide information on fishery interactions. Regular stock assessment is required to provide management advice to the Commission.
